About NARHI

 

The National Association of Registered Home Inspectors was founded in January 2006.  Click here to view the Association's constitution.

The standards and policies of the Association are agreed by an Executive Board which is comprised of the following members:


Hugh Dunsmore-Hardy, Chairman
 

After 30 years in the property services industry Hugh entered the world of Association Management. He was the Chief Executive of the National Association of Estate Agents for 9 years and where he established a reputation as a prominent PR spokesperson for the sector.

Also Hugh was Chairman of the Board of the National Approved Letting Scheme and actively assisted and promoted the scheme’s development. As an enthusiastic advocate for Home Information Packs he has been closely involved with the development of the Home Condition Report and the standards for Home Inspectors.


Anne Hinds
Honorary Treasurer
 

Anne has completed her qualification for the Home Inspector diploma.  She has been involved in the surveying industry for more than 20 years and is an assessor and trainer for the Home Inspector qualification


Graham Ellis
Board Representative

Graham is Managing Director of The Survey And Valuation Company, Ormskirk, Lancashire. 

He is working with surveyors, prospective home inspectors and domestic energy assessors, estate agents, pack providers and solicitors to get HIPs up and running in the local market place.  The Survey and Valuation Company is one of the DCLGs early adopters.

He is currently undergoing SAVA Assessment, and is a Member of the RICS Residential Faculty Board, and a Council Member for ISA.

 


Duncan Kirkby
Board Representative

Duncan is Senior Partner of a Chartered Surveyors practice in the Northern Home Counties and heads up the residential survey and valuation department. He has qualified for the Home Inspector Diploma and is a technical assessor for SAVA and is an enthusiastic supporter of the Home Information Pack.


Tom Littler
Board Representative

Tom is a Chartered Surveyor, practising in Residential Estate Agency and Surveying in the North West and Welsh Borders with Isherwoods. He is Director of Surveying for OpenBook, a HIP Provider and Consultancy.

A fervent supporter of HIPs, he believes that there is a great opportunity to improve Consumers’ sales experiences, and their perception of the roles of Estate Agents and Surveyors.

Tom supports the Independent Sector, and recognises the importance of maintaining local networks of Agents, Conveyancers, and Surveyors.

He is a member of CHIPS, a Technical Assessor for the ABBE Diploma in Home Inspections, RICS APC/TPC Assessor, and sits on various ODPM and AHIPPS Technical Working Groups.

 


Tony Herbert
Board Representative

Tony is a Chartered Surveyor.  He qualified in 1975 and set up his own estate agency in 1978 in south Hertfordshire.

Nine years later he moved premises and concentrated on surveying only, mainly in the residential field and eventually concentrating in that area.

Tony is an assessor for SAVA with numerous candidates and gives occasional guidance to those aspiring to be Home Inspectors.   Tony has been enthusiastic about HIPs since their inception and is convinced that it is the right move in the housing market.  He and others recognised the need for a body such as NARHI in the early stages and is proud to be involved.


Hilary Grayson
Board Representative

Hilary is a former chartered surveyor and is now Head of Training and Assessment for SAVA.   She has a degree in Estate Management and joined RICS in 1983.


Following a career break, she returned to RICS to work in the old QS and Rural Practice Divisions before becoming Director of the Residential Faculty, an experience which is invaluable in assisting with the establishment of the new trade association.  She moved to SAVA in 2000 as Operations Director, managing the Accreditation Schemes and assisting with the ODPM research contract into the HI scheme, focussing on the development of the NOS and the HI qualification.


Chris Balshen
Board Representative

Christian is from Newcastle upon Tyne and is NARHI’s only Founder Member from the North East. Christian is currently studying in the fourth year of the part time Building Surveying degree at Northumbria University. He is also employed at Mackenzie Partnership, a building surveyors based in Scotland and the North East of England.

Christian is undergoing the Home Inspectors Diploma assessment process with SAVA and expects to have completed the diploma by May 2006. Christian hopes to promote the role of home inspector in the North East and to encourage people to undergo the assessment process and gain the diploma.


Stephen Callaghan
Board Representative

Stephen is the creator and Chief Executive of Home Inspectors.co.uk, a specialist national training and business exchange for home inspectors.

Well known within the surveying profession, Stephen is an author and educator with a background in professional practice and standards.

Over the past 20 years he has been a contributor to many reform groups including the Government Advisory Group to improve the home buying and selling process. He recently assisted in the development of the Home Inspector National Occupational Standards and Guidance Notes. Stephen was the lead writer of the standard text to be used by Home Inspectors in preparing Home Condition Reports.

He is an RICS examiner, author of the "Home Condition Report", "Building Survey" and "Homebuyer Survey and Valuation" chapters of isurv.co.uk, a prizewinning online surveyor resource, and author of "Homebuyer Survey to Home Condition Report - Making the Change"

Gary Reynolds
Board Representative

Gary is a Chartered Building Surveyor with his own private practice in Wimbledon, London and specialises in Building Surveying, Specific Defect Analysis and Party Wall. 

Gary was a practicing electrician specialising in domestic installations. Then following a successful career in the London Fire Service he undertook a course of study at Greenwich University achieving a first class honours degree in building surveying.

Gary has become a qualified assessor and undertakes assessment and verification for SAVA. He also presents various training events for Home Inspectors and lectures on services installations.

 

Jon Charters-Reid
Board Representative

Jon is a Chartered Building Surveyor, member of the Chartered Institute of Building and an Assessor for the RICS and SAVA.  As a practising surveyor he runs his own surveying practice based in York and provides training in Building Services. As a Director of UK Surveys and Valuations Jon has a good understanding of the New home buying process.
